In the heart of Jambang Jelly, a town nestled in South Kombo – West Coast, The Gambia, a vision was born in 2022. A vision fueled by necessity, commitment, and a deep love for Islamic scholarship. That vision became Imam Al-Bukhari University—a beacon of knowledge and a first-of-its-kind institution in the far west of Africa.
The Beginning: A College with a Purpose
Initially known as Imam Al-Bukhari College, the institution was established with a clear and noble mission: to provide quality education in Hadith studies and its sciences, right here in The Gambia. While Islamic education had made significant strides at the lower levels, there was a glaring gap in higher education for aspiring scholars. Very few students were able to secure scholarships to study abroad—less than 5% by some estimates—leaving many with no options for continuing their academic journey in Islamic studies.
This shortage of opportunities became a catalyst. Scholars, students, parents, and stakeholders in Islamic education came together, united by a shared goal: to create a local institution that could bridge this gap and offer high-quality education rooted in Islamic principles.
A Historic Milestone
Their efforts bore fruit. In just a short time, Imam Al-Bukhari College grew in reputation and academic influence. On January 2, 2025, a landmark moment was achieved—the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority of The Gambia officially approved its transformation into a university.
This upgrade was more than a change in name. It signified a new chapter, a broader mission, and a deeper responsibility. Now as a university, the institution can offer a wider range of programs, accommodate more students, and attract scholars from across the region.
Looking Ahead
Imam Al-Bukhari University is strategically located to serve not only Gambian students, but also those from neighboring countries such as Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Guinea-Conakry, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and beyond. Its establishment marks a significant development in West Africa’s academic landscape, particularly in the realm of Islamic education.
From its humble beginnings as a college to its current status as a university, the journey of Imam Al-Bukhari University is a story of vision, perseverance, and purpose. It is a story still being written—by the students who enroll, the scholars who teach, and the communities that will benefit for generations to come.
